Follow these steps to either enable or disable DHCP on your PC, as well as set your DNS to static or dynamic.
- Click on the Start menu and type Network and Sharing Center in the search box, then click Enter.
- Click on Change adapter settings located on the left column header.
- Choose your network adapter, right click and choose Properties.
- Highlight Internet Protocol Version (TCP/IPv4) and click on Properties.
- If you want to enable DHCP, make sure Obtain an IP address automatically is selected, as well as Obtain DNS server address automatically.
- If you want to disable DHCP and enter your network settings instead, select the Use the following IP address option and enter values for IP address, Subnet mask, and Default Gateway. Also, select the Use the following DNS server address option and enter a value for Preferred DNS server. You can also enter a value for Alternate DNS server if you want.
For macOS users, follow these steps:
- Go to System Preferences and then select Network.
- Select the Wi-Fi icon on the left and then select Advanced down at the bottom.
- On the next page, select the TCP/IP tab and make sure 'Using DHCP' is selected. If not, change it to read 'Using DHCP'.
- Only select the option 'Manually' if you were instructed by your local IT support and you know what values should be entered for IP, Network Mask, Router/Gateway, and DNS.
