Before you begin

Visit our Service Catalog and order a license. You'll receive a confirmation email with a link to download the license file needed to activate the software.

NOTE: In December of 2021, SAS issued a security bulletin advising anyone running version 9.4 TS1M6 or 9.4 TS1M7 to take steps to address the “log4j” vulnerability (aka “Log4Shell”) that has been making international headlines. If you are installing the software for the first time, visit this page to learn how to download & apply the fix to remove the vulnerability. If you're renewing your license only, please follow the steps as well.

Updating your license only

If you're installing SAS for the first time, skip to the next section for instructions on how to download the software and perform the install.

  1. Go to the Start Menu > SAS > Renew SAS Software.
  2. Follow the prompts to install the new license file.

Downloading SAS

The instructions assume you are using a GUI.

  1. Visit our SharePoint site and select the "SAS" folder.
  2. Select the folder containing the version you wish to install ("9.3" or "9.4") and then open the folder for the one you purchased ("Administrative" or "Teaching & Research"). The "SAS Server" folder is for faculty & staff who purchased the more expensive license.
  3. Select the Linux zip file. NOTE: The Server version is the only one available for SAS 9.4 Teaching & Research.
  4. When prompted, select "Download". NOTE: This is a very large file so it may take hours to download.
  5. Once the file is downloaded, double-click the zip file and follow the prompts to unzip the file.
  6. Open the new SAS folder on your computer and proceed to the next set of instructions.

Installing SAS for the first time

Using a GUI

The instructions assume you are using a GUI. To install without a GUI, skip to the next section.

  1. Start the SAS installer by double-clicking on the file setup.sh.
  2. On the select a language prompt, leave the default as English (or choose a different language) and click OK.
  3. You should see a Select Deployment Task screen which lists 3 options. Leave the default Install SAS Software and click Next.
  4. On the Specify SAS Home screen choose Create a new SAS Home. If you are installing this on a machine with SAS already installed, you'll have the option to "Select a previously created SAS Home". If you choose that, it will overwrite the previous installation.
  5. On the Select Deployment Type screen choose Install SAS Foundation and Related Software and click Next . Do NOT leave on the default Perform a planned deployment.
  6. On the Select Products to Install screen, select the SAS Foundation and related software option.
  7. Next, choose the products you would like to use by clicking on the box in the left hand corner next to the name of each product and click Next. If you are unsure leave default, as some options require additional configuration.
  8. On the Specify SAS Installation Data File screen, select Browse and search for the SAS license file you downloaded earlier. Once you locate it in the Browse window, double click on the file. Then click Next.
  9. On the Deployment Summary screen, select Start to begin the install. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation.

Without a GUI

If you would prefer to install it without a GUI, the SAS installer can be run in text mode using the -console switch. Follow these steps after you download the ZIP file. Commands are in bold between brackets. You may need to run these commands as sudo.

  1. Unzip the file by running the command [unzip SAS94M7-Linux64.zip].
  2. Open the SAS folder and then open the 94M7 folder. Once there, run the command [./setup.sh -console]
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to install the software (the installation steps are the same as the section above).

Launching SAS without a GUI

If you are not using an X display, you can invoke SAS in interactive line mode by using the NODMS system option. The SAS application can be found in the /usr/local/SASHome/SASFoundation/9.4 directory. Visit this page to learn more how to use the NODMS option.
