SPSS: How to Install the Software or Renew your License on Windows

Introduction

• This installation requires that you have administrator rights on the computer. If you are unsure, please partner with your local IT support.
• This installation will not work if you attempt it from off-campus, the campus wifi network, or ResNet without first running the Cisco AnyConnect VPN. Details on how to download and install the VPN can be found at oit.uci.edu/vpn.
• If a phrase is surrounded by square brackets, [like this], the brackets are used to set off a phrase. When typing, do not enter the brackets as part of the phrase.

Licensing Prerequisites

• To complete the installation, you must have either the 20-character Authorization Code (for the Standalone License) or the License Manager Server Name (for the Lab Network License) you received via email when your order was processed. If you need us to resend it, please email oit@uci.edu.
• The Authorization Code expires on June 30 of each year and must be renewed annually. There are separate order forms in the Service Catalog for employees and students.

Renew License Only (no software installation)

1. From the Windows Desktop, click Start > All Programs > IBM SPSS Statistics > SPSS License Authorization Wizard.
2. The License Method dialog appears. Click the radio button next to License my product now then click Next.
3. The Enter Codes dialog appears. Enter the 20-character authorization code that you received from OIT (be sure there are no spaces before or after the code).
4. The Internet Authorization Status dialog appears. In this dialog you should see a message such as “Successfully processed all codes.” (If not, make a Screen Print of the dialog shown on the screen, or copy the entire dialog message, and send it to the OIT Help Desk.) Click Next.
5. The License Completed dialog appears. Click Finish.

Installation

I. Mount the OIT Research Software Repository.

1. Click the Start button and then click Computer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Map Network Drive.
3. In the Drive box, select a drive letter.
4. In the Folder box, enter the following info in the Folder line: [\\software.oit.uci.edu\software].
5. Before your proceed, please uncheck Reconnect at Logon and check the box for Connect Using Different Credentials. Then click Finish.
6. You will have to enter a username [software] and password [install] to complete the login.
7. If a browser window does not open, please make sure you’ve spelled the connection information correctly. If it still doesn’t open, send us an email at oit@uci.edu.
8. Navigate to the folder for the version of SPSS that you'd like to install. Copy that folder to the Downloads folder on your computer. Do NOT run the installation over the network because it will take many hours to complete and will most likely fail.

IIa. Run the installation program (SPSS Network/Concurrent User License)

If you purchased a Network License from OIT, follow the instructions under this section; otherwise proceed to section IIb down below. For a network license, no authorization code is required during installation, however you must get the License Manager name from OIT.

1. Start the SPSS installer by double-clicking on the application file SPSS_Statistics_2… (You may need to click Run on a popup window AND/OR you may need to re-enter the login credentials of software/install if prompted).
2. There may be a somewhat lengthy delay (~ 5 to 30 minutes) in the processing of the Installation Wizard dialog . Please DO NOT close the program as it will reset your installation.
3. The SPSS for Windows dialog appears with License Information. Click Next.
4. On the next screen you will see two license options: click the radio button next to Concurrent User License then click Next.
5. The Software License Agreement Information dialog appears. Select I accept and click Next.
6. The License Manager dialog appears. In the License Manager Name or Server IP Address window, enter the name of the License Manager flexlm2.oit.uci.edu and then click Set. Click Next.
7. The Help Language dialog appears. Choose to install the help documentation in languages other than English if you want then click Next.
8. The Assistive Technology window appears. Decide if you want to install special screen reading software, and then click Next.
9. The Essentials for Python window appears next. If you'd like to install three Python components, click Yes and then Next (you may see separate license agreements for these components).
10. The Destination Folder dialog appears. Click Next.
11. The Ready to Install the Program dialog appears. Click Install.
12. The installer will end by opening the InstallShield Wizard Completed dialog. Notice the Register with spss.com checkbox in the lower left of the dialog. Uncheck this box if you do not want to give SPSS Inc. your contact information. (This is completely optional.) Click Finish.
13. Try running SPSS: if it does not load please go to Start > All Programs > IBM SPSS Statistics > SPSS Statistics Commuter License.
14. Please highlight SPSS Statistics (1200) for the version of SPSS you are currently running and set the Duration (days) in the box below to a value between 1 to 7.
15. Click Checkout, then Exit. SPSS should now run on the commuter license.

IIb. Run the installation program (SPSS Standalone/Authorized User License)

If you purchased a Standalone License from OIT, follow these instructions under this section; otherwise, return to section IIa up above.

1. Start the SPSS installer by double-clicking on the application file SPSS_Statistics_2… (You may need to click Run on a popup window AND/OR you may need to re-enter the login credentials of software/install if prompted).
2. There may be a somewhat lengthy delay (~ 5 to 30 minutes) in the processing of the Installation Wizard dialog . Please DO NOT close the program as it will reset your installation.
3. The SPSS for Windows dialog appears with License Information. Click Next.
4. On the next screen you will see two license options: click the radio button next to Authorized User License then click Next.
5. The Software License Agreement Information dialog appears. Select I accept and click Next.
6. The Customer Information dialog appears wherein you need to enter your name, organization (UCI). Click Next.
7. The Help Language dialog appears. Choose to install the help documentation in either All Languages or the Current Language then click Next.
8. The Assistive Technology window appears. Decide if you want to install special screen reading software, and then click Next.
9. The Essentials for Python window appears next. If you'd like to install three Python components, click Yes and then Next (you may see separate license agreements for these components).
10. The Destination Folder dialog appears. Click Next.
11. The Ready to Install the Program dialog appears. Click Install.
12. Once the standalone license installation is complete the License and Register IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows dialog appears. Notice the click here to register checkbox in the lower left of the dialog. Uncheck this box if you do not want to give IBM your contact information. (This is completely optional.) Then click OK.
13. The Choose Licensing Method dialog appears. Click the radio button next to License my product now then click Next.
14. The Enter Codes dialog appears. Enter the 20-character authorization code that you received from OIT (be sure there are no spaces before or after the code).
15. If you purchased SPSS add-on modules from IBM you should have received one unique authorization code for each of those add-on products. If so, click Enter additional codes. Enter the add-on code in the Enter Code: window. Click Add if you have another code to enter. Repeat this procedure for each add-on code. Click Next.
16. The Internet Authorization Status dialog appears. In this dialog you should see a message such as “Successfully processed all codes.” (If not, make a Screen Print of the dialog shown on the screen, or copy the entire dialog message, and send it to the OIT Help Desk.) Click Next.
17. The License Completed dialog appears. Click Finish.

• If, after installing SPSS, you purchase SPSS add-on modules and receive authorization codes from IBM, you can enter those codes at a later time. To do so, from the Windows Desktop, click Start > All Programs > IBM SPSS Statistics > SPSS License Authorization Wizard.
• The License Status dialog appears. Click Next and proceed as described above starting with the Choose Licensing Method dialog.

III. Unmount the Repository

1. Click the Start button and then click Computer.
2. In the windows that appears, right-click the icon for the mapped drive you created earlier.
3. Click Disconnect.
